Description
Pan fried morel mushrooms are a springtime delicacy that is foraged from the woods of a few lucky hunters. Packed with flavor, this recipe highlights the mushroom’s earthy profile.
Ingredients
-
Morel Mushrooms 1 pound
-
Saltine Crackers 2 cups
-
Salt 1/2 teaspoon
-
Pepper 1/4 teaspoon
-
Eggs 2 each
-
Butter 4 Tablespoons
Instructions
-
Gather all of the necessary components.
-
Crush a package of saltine crackers into a fine powder. The crackers were placed in a gallon Ziplock bag. Gently crush the crackers with a rolling pin, then roll the pin over the bag several times. Continue rolling until all of the crackers have converted into a fine powder, flipping the bag frequently.
-
Crack your eggs into a medium-sized mixing bowl and whisk them together.
-
2 tablespoons butter, melted in a big pan on the stove over medium heat
-
Toss a handful of mushrooms into the whipped egg with a fork to coat them. Scoop the mushrooms out of the egg with a fork and shake off any excess egg. Toss in the cracker crumbs in a Ziplock bag until gently coated.
-
Place the morels in a single layer in the hot pan one by one.
Allow the mushrooms to brown for 5 minutes, depending on the temperature of the pan. Keep a close eye on the frying pan. If you need more butter, drizzle it in between the mushrooms a bit at a time. You don’t want the mushrooms to be drenched in butter. It’s time to flip once the browning begins!
-
Each mushroom should be flipped and browned on the other side. To ensure that the mushrooms are cooked properly, make sure they are golden brown on all sides. Morel mushrooms that aren’t fully cooked can make you sick.
-
Place the pan-fried morel mushrooms on a paper towel lined dish to absorb any extra fat after thoroughly cooking
Notes
Where Do Morels Grow Best?
In the spring, you can discover morel mushrooms in Michigan. The weather has a big influence on how bountiful the crop is. Warm temperatures and moist weather aid in the emergence of the caps from the earth. The morels will not be able to grow due to the cold and dry spring weather. Morels thrive in woodland regions that have been burned by fire and are regenerating new growth.
Why Are Morels So Expensive?
Because of the quantity and demand of the delectable fungus, morels are quite pricey. Hunters can’t seem to get enough of it! Especially if the spring weather in Michigan isn’t cooperating.
